In his best-selling book, Into Thin Air, as a mountaineering expert, Jon Krakauer described how the poor leadership and decision -making led to a tragedy on Mount Everest, the highest peak(8.848.13m) in the world.
In April 1996, Krakauer joined the mountaineering team named "Venture consultants". In the spring of that year, several teams were on Mount Everest, but "Venture Consultants" was in close contact with the mountaineering team named "Mount Mad". Rob Hall, a New Zealander aged 35, is the leader of the team" Venture Consultants". The American, Scott Fischer, is the leader of the team "Mount Mad."
It was the first time for his team to climb Mount Everest. Among the members of the team "Mount Mad", many were new hands in mountain climbing.
Climbing Mount Everest is an extremely risky activity: mountaineers have to bear different kinds of altitude-related pains and diseases such as frostbite, hypothermia, severe weight loss and lung and brain damage.
At about midnight on May 9, 1996, the team "Venture Consultants" led by Hall and the team "Mount Mad" led by Fischer(the two teams had in total 20 members) started their last climb. The members of the two teams were all told to return to the camp before 14:00, even though they failed to reach the top. The climbing process was extremely slow. At about 13:00, Krakauer reached the top and returned. Rob Hall and Scott Fischer paid no attention to their time limit. The members of the two teams were still on Mount Everest at 15:00. A very strong snowstorm came at about 18:00. Though other mountaineering teams had tried to assist, the two leaders and three members of the two teams lost their life unfortunately.
Many mistakes had led to this tragedy at Mount Everest: the ignorance of the time for returning to the camp, too self-confident, poor judgment, etc. However, the condition at Mount Everest would not allow any single mistake.
